BRAND IMPACT – ADIDAS, A Narrative and Analysis

Million Dollar Question

Three Stripe Life and Recruiting – A Three Part Realistic Fiction

Scene 1 – A Meeting of Legends, Portland, Oregon

Kanye West, James Harden, Patrick Mahomes, and Lionel Messi walk into a bar. They huddle up in a cozy spot in the back. A circular table, like a scene out of Swingers. These superstars order a round of drinks and catch up. Aaron Rodgers shuffles in, apologizing for his tardiness.

The waitress asks, “Does somebody wanna open a tab?” They all look at Mahomes, the rookie of the crew. A rising super star. Last year’s Super Bowl MVP obliges; he knows the rules.

The guys laugh for a while and enjoy the first round. Harden jokes, “Ya’ll realize I’m the most recognizable face at this table right now?” General disagreement at the table.

Rodgers speaks up, “So you think the beard gives you that much clout?”

Kanye, now a man of God but very much a businessman, summons the waitress. “Excuse me, miss, can you please identify each of my friends here at the table?”

The waitress is used to serving celebrities and famous athletes. After all, she works just a few blocks from Adidas Headquarters in Portland. She’s cute, she knows it and realizes if she plays along, she will probably be getting a nice tip.

She has a little giggle, thinks for a minute and gives it her best shot working left to right around the circular table, left to right starting with Kanye pointing with her finger.

“Okay, you are Kim’s husband. The beard is James Harden. Guy in the middle? I’ve seen your face recently but can’t think of your name (she knows it but she’s being flirty). Is the short guy like your manager or something? And Aaron Rodgers, my dad is a huge Packers fan so I couldn’t miss that one.” Everybody laughs.

The short guy has yet to say anything all night. That’s kind of his style. Soft spoken. Stoic. A silent killer. He finally speaks up, “A quien le importa.” He couldn’t care less.

Mahomes loses it. “I didn’t know this man talked! I know you are a legend and the goat and all but that is literally the first time I’ve heard your voice!”

“Prefiero mis pies.” He lets his feet do the talking. “O mi banco…” Or his bank account.

Now they are rolling. Kanye calls out, “So you wanna play that game, Messi?” Leo smiles, shaking his head in laughter. He knows his Three Stripe colleague has made close to 1.3 BILLION off of the Yeezys. His Predator cleats don’t stand a chance.

The old vetean chimes in, “What is clout though? How do you measure it? Is it being recognizable? Money? IG Followers? Dare I say, winning? Does winning have anything to do with it?!”

They could  talk shop and compare bags all night. But Kanye finally reminds them that time is money and they are here for a reason today: expanding the brand. “Darius Williams has ALL of that, A-Rod. We gotta get this kid to sign with Adidas tomorrow morning. That’s why we all showed out from all over. He’s gonna be the next LeBron. The Prince of PG County will now be the Prince of the Three Stripe Life. And all that will do is ensure that Messi’s bank account, and everybody’s bank account, will continue to grow.”

Finally, something they can ALL agree with.

Scene 2 – A Young Prince – Prince George’s County, Maryland

Darius Williams has just finished scoring 41 points in front of 3,000 people. A sellout event to showcase high school basketball talent. He is the number one recruit in the country. Coach K is courtside. Tom Izzo is there with his entire coaching staff. UCLA, Kansas, Texas, North Carolina and all the other blue bloods all represented.

Darius is different from last generation’s rising superstar. He has the traditional gifts, standing 6’6 with world-class athleticism. Some are calling him the next Kobe. But it’s the new age off the court measurables that matter in today’s recruiting. And that’s where he is special.

By the time he was entering high school, he was blue-check verified on Instagram. By his sophomore year, he had a million followers. The summer before his junior year, he went live with Vanessa Hudgens and she said that she would take him on a date for his 18th birthday.

Darius Williams is from Prince George’s County, the Mecca of high school basketball talent. He was born to play in the NBA. And his parents know it. The entire country has been trying to get a look at Darius. But thankfully, his mom and dad have been watching his every move as well. His pops was a great player back in the day and he has seen hundreds of talented kids come inches from stardom in PG County. Only to make one bad decision and lose it all. Mr. and Mrs. Williams made sure their son would not make that mistake. Darius was going to be the next Kevin Durant.

Due to NCAA rules, the coaches can’t talk to Darius after the game. And due to his parents rules, no one else can either. His dad has actually hired a group of friends to make sure NO ONE bothers Darius or tries to influence him in any way. He takes his classes online so that he is not corrupted at school. The Williams family is just months away from being millionaires.

Darius can be found one of two places: at home or at the gym with his team. He has a strict schedule that makes sure he stays on the right path every day.  However, tomorrow is going to be different. The Williams family is flying to Portland, Oregon, to the United States Adidas Headquarters for an important meeting.

Scene 3 – The Question, Portland, Oregon

Darius Williams steps off a private jet. He had flown many times in the last few years. He played in AAU “Circuit” Events all over the country: the Nike EYBL for Team Durant in the Peach Jam, the Under Armor Circuit with Team Curry, but most recently, he was playing in the Adidas Gold Gauntlet. He was the prized player on Team Lillard.

Him and Dame go back and forth regularly via text. As he does with many of the NBA superstars. It was his dad that chose Team Lillard. He had spent a long time privately weighing the opportunities of each team. It was tough turning down Team Durant with Darius also being from PG County. But, Mr. Williams wanted his son to stand alone and stand out. KD would have to understand. After all, this is business.

Getting out of the Uber, Damian Lillard welcomes the Williams Family to the Adidas Headquarters. They walk into a glass building with contemporary architecture. After shaking a few hands, Lillard opens the door into a conference room with a long table. The table of legends.

A music and cultural icon, the NBA’s leading scorer, two super bowl MVPs and arguably the most famous athlete on the planet. After all, soccer is the world’s game. But basketball is catching up. And it’s crazy, but Darius Williams fits right in with this crowd.

After a few minutes of small talk, Aaron Rodgers asks the literal million dollar question. “So what’s the move champ? Are you ready to join the Three-Stripe Life?”

Who’s Who in the Adidas Realm

An Analysis of the Major Adidas Schools

“I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man.” This is just the beginning. And if you haven’t listened to Zach Smith’s Menace 2 Sports Podcast Episode 98 about the future business of college athletics, be sure to do so. Zach articulately breaks down and explains how these new NCAA “rules and guidelines” are going to be utilized throughout the country. Simply put, the recent NCAA decision to allow college players to sign with agents and receive monetary compensation represents a monumental paradigm shift across the entire landscape of amateur and collegiate athletics.

The story above is entirely fictional as it pertains to the characters. However, the anecdotal scenario laid out is both realistic and inevitable. While there isn’t actually a five-star recruit from PG County named Darius Williams, there are certainly many young athletes all over the country who could have similar experiences in the near future.

The remainder of the article breaks down Adidas and their brand impact in the inevitable arms race that is college athletics. How is Adidas going to find a way to dominate college basketball while also navigating a successful niche on the football field? As Zach outlines on the show, Adidas has already been attempting to do everything we are discussing illegally on the west coast football scene using the “Grassroots Movement.”

Overall, Adidas is the dark horse of the major brands. Primarily championed by their soccer affiliation, Adidas sponsors Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and many other WORLDWIDE enterprises that dwarf the likes of Alabama or Clemson football. The Three Stripe Life is going to be fine one way or the other.

It’s important to note: Adidas has had a major influence on college basketball and that will most definitely continue. It’s likely that when Darius Williams finally made his hypothetical collegiate decision, he would’ve chosen between Kansas, Indiana, Louisville, Miami, or another Adidas powerhouse.

Kansas already flexed their invincibility at their Midnight Madness back in October 2019. Snoop Dogg performed in a cloud smoke surrounded by exotic dancers. In what was ultimately supposed to be a glorified meet the team and open practice, Kansas smirked at the NCAA and hosted their own club banger. Do you think that event was at all intriguing to a recruit like our Darius Williams? And now he can meet local businesses after the show, and promote their products on IG. Ball game.

Yes, college sports is very much a show. A show in which the actors are 99% of the entertainment yet they have historically collected 1% of the profit. Nah, that money went traditionally to the patriarchy that simply produced it behind the scenes. Not for long.

Below is a list of the top Adidas schools and a potential pecking order for which athletic programs could cash in on the new system. We have considered traditional fan support, alumni base, city demographics and landscape and other important factors as it pertains to business infrastructure.

1. Miami Hurricanes – The U is capable of top 25 in football and basketball annually. They have the tradition and the brand. In terms of location, the recruits are excited about the South Beach vibes and the celebrity appeal. A relatively small but Uber-wealthy alumni base combined with big name marketing opportunities for the players makes the Canes a prize horse for Adidas.

2. Kansas – Despite Kansas lack of success in football, they are arguably the most important basketball institution in the nation. Already marred with turmoil and speculation, Kansas now has the freedom to recruit by selling their brand as well as financial opportunity. Capable of landing 5 star recruits and winning National Championships every year, the Rock Chalk Jayhawks are a truly rock for the Three Stripes. Basketball players at Kansas are local celebrities, bottom line. Can Les Miles sell this in football as well?

3. Louisville – Like Miami, Louisville can put a top 25 program together in both major sports. A town with rich sports pedigree from boxing to horse racing, Louisville has always been underrated. A consistent national title contender in hoops, can they also land the next Lamar Jackson on the gridiron? If they can, his face will soon be on a billboard next to American Pharoah and Muhammad Ali. The Cardinals can be a force for Adidas.

4. Texas A&M – Kiss your dates when the Aggies score. And they might score big with their Adidas partnership soon. Everything is bigger in Texas and nothing is bigger than football. They have a massive alumni base, top notch infrastructure and a strong culture. They have been hit or miss with hoops but they are a 5 star away from being back on the map. Buzz Williams is a tremendous young coach that the recruits love. He is the perfect guy to sell the clout. Texas A&M is ready.

5. Indiana – Indiana basketball is never as good as their fans think they are but this matters very little. What’s important is just that. Even when they underachieve, the people still love them. They’ve always recruited well. Now, players can represent local car sales and restaurants, the Hoosier State will be an appealing destination for a young hooper. On the football side, the Hoosiers have been poor, low attendance, and no big stars. Until they change that, Adidas will find other athletic institutions more valuable overall.

6. NC State – Here’s another school that is capable of top 25 performance in football and basketball. Rarely threatening much further, the Wolfpack are still a solid B-List school. It’s a basketball rich state but they are not far from the DMV for recruiting both major sports. NC State is reliable.

7. Nebraska – A little bit of a wild card in this discussion. Obviously, their football program has all the support you could ever want. Every game is a sellout and the tradition is there. Between Scott Frost and Fred Hoiberg, the main sports have two young studs championing the Cornhusker brand. Of course, they will have to step up their recruiting significantly to truly compete in the Big Ten. But does their success even matter as long as everyone is getting paid? Aaron Rodgers posed the same question in the narrative above.

8. Mississippi State – Mississippi State, like Texas A&M, is able to add the third sport: baseball. SEC baseball is one of the most underrated enterprises in all of college sports. If you know you know. Both the Aggies and the Bulldogs are capable of landing top recruits and unleashing a top 25 program on all three playing fields. Mississippi State is another reliable option for Adidas.

9. Rutgers and a bunch of mid-majors. Adidas sponsors the second most schools of all sports brands. They will feel comfortable heading into the future of college sports.

Betting- Over/Under Win Totals in the Big Ten

As the US continues with a national emergency and all sports are cancelled, degenerates are still finding ways to lose money. According to William Hill Sportsbook in Vegas, they are taking a decent amount of action on Russian Table Tennis; this is not a drill. Many of us are guilty of wagering on teams that we’ve never even watched before, but Covid-19 has taken some bettors into a new paradigm of problem gambling.

However, as sports leagues are devising plans to get their seasons started back up in the coming months, Menace2Sports has you covered (pun entirely intended). As we get closer to sports, and particularly college football, we are hoping you check back regularly for gambling insider info. During #CoronaBreak2020, we have put together several resources to get you prepared to crush your sportsbook in the near future.

First up: the over/under win totals for the Big Ten. Wagering on season win totals takes patience. However, it is a lot safer than getting backdoored when your team is winning by four touchdowns before they put in the walk-ons and give up a meaningless score because the coach who is getting blown out still has the starters in to try to make the score look respectable. And your wife wonders why you just yelled at the TV during a 28-point game.

It is smart to approach future bets similar to stocks, knowing that you need to be patient and watch your money increase over time. The reason why sports betting is much safer than stocks is almost everything in the sports world is available to the public. You can read up on a team, watch the film, do your research and sometimes even get inside info.

Note: in most cases, season win total wagers only pay even money or a little less. Doesn’t seem to make much sense (or dollars, for that matter) to bet 10 bucks just to try to make 20 a half year later. But if you think a team could be great or terrible, load up, enjoy the season, and then collect! And without further ado:

Ohio State (11 Wins) – Take the over. It is almost a lock. Even if they win 11, it’s still a push and you get some money back. Conference Championship games and bowl games count. Ohio State will have the best offense in the country. They will have a chip on their shoulder. Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer both won National Championships in year two at OSU. If the season goes like they hope, Ohio State will play 15 games. You will literally need to score 40 points to beat the Buckeyes. OHIO STATE HAS WON 11 GAMES OR MORE IN ALL OF THE LAST 8 SEASONS.

Penn State (9.5 wins) – Once again, the OVER. Penn State returns their QB, several weapons on offense, and the best defensive player in the country. Road games include at Virginia Tech, at Michigan, at Indiana, at Nebraska, and at Rutgers. Expect them to play some tough games with a sweat, but they will get to double digit wins even if it takes a bowl victory to get there.

Wisconsin (9.5 wins) – Take the UNDER with Wisconsin. They had a remarkable season last year and still only won 10 games. They lose Jonathan Taylor and several other weapons. We will find out how good Jack Coan is without them. Wisconsin opens with a challenge vs Indiana and later travels to Michigan in week 4 (revenge game for Michigan) right before a week 5 matchup with Notre Dame. In an improving Big Ten West, Wisconsin takes a step back.

Michigan (9 wins) – UNDER, but it will likely push with a bowl win. Notice Michigan does not have a .5 (a hook) after their win total. Michigan is just good enough to win 9 games\. Jim Harbaugh averages 9.33 repeating wins in his five years at Michigan. That’s just who they are. However, winning more than 9 is going to be very tough. They open at Washington, have two cupcakes, and then play Wisconsin and Penn State at home before going to East Lansing and Minnesota. All back to back to back to back. The schedule softens up enough for Harbaugh and Gattis to win the fan base back before they finish the regular season in Columbus. We predict Michigan will win 8 regular season games and then wipe someone bad in a bowl game to push the total at 9 wins. The under bet is safe because you will likely get your money back in the worst case. Betting against “9 Win U.”

Minnesota (9 wins) – Take the OVER. The Gophers went 11-2 last year. They lose Tyler Johnson and Antoine Winfield to the NFL, but they return Tanner Morgan and Rashod Bateman. Assuming they can beat Iowa at home week 3, Minnesota should open the season 5-0. Meaning that in order for you to at least get your money back, they would only have to finish 4-4. We believe they can steal a big win vs Michigan, Wisconsin, etc. that will get them over the hump. There’s great value in the Gophers.

Indiana (7.5 wins) – Cash the OVER. Warning: you are probably starting 0-1 with them opening at Wisconsin who they never beat. However, they will be solid favorites in their next 5 games before playing MSU and PSU at home. Michael Penix Jr. is heading for a breakout season. They were a fluke ending in the bowl game away from winning 10 games last year without him. Cash out with the Hoosiers. This is one of our most confident plays.

Iowa (7 wins) – STAY CLEAR/NO BET. This looks like a trap line. Iowa won 10 games last year. Initially, it seems like easy money to take the cover. However, when something looks too good to be true, it usually is. Does Vegas know something that we don’t know? They graduate their QB and their best defensive player. Looking forward, Iowa will be an underdog in all of their road games (at Minny, at OSU, at PSU, at Illinois, at Purdue). It seems that they will have several tossup games at home. Gun to my head, I’m taking the under. But the final reason to stay clear is to save yourself the boredom of watching Iowa football. Even if they made it so all sports were cancelled for Coronavirus except Iowa football, I still couldn’t watch it!

Nebraska (6.5 wins) – UNDER again. Nebraska has won 4 games and 5 games in Scott Frost’s first two seasons respectively. They have another tough schedule coming up with Purdue week one and Cincinnati week four. Looking at the schedule initially, we only saw two games (South Dakota State and Rutgers) that we counted as sure wins. Central Michigan is week 2 and they won the MAC last year, be careful. They didn’t do anything in year one or two that leads us to believe much will change.

Northwestern (5.5 wins) – UNDER again. Pat Fitzgerald had the Wildcats in the Big Ten Championship just two seasons ago. But last year, they went 3-9 overall and 1-8 in the Big Ten. Like Nebraska, we simply didn’t see anything that led us to believe much would be different this year. However, we also didn’t assume they would go from West Champs to 1-8 so the Wildcats are tough to figure out. They open with a complete tossup at MSU week one. We strongly believe that outcome will play a huge factor in their win total.

Illinois (5 wins) – OVER. With caution. Bowl eligible last year and a returning QB, Illinois will be a double-digit favorite in their first four games. They have a great chance to start 4-0. So, Vegas is banking on Illinois finishing 1-7 and not making a bowl game? The end of their season is absolutely brutal. They won’t be favored in hardly any games. However, we think they can get at least one of their last eight games to get to at least a push. They aren’t going to lose to Illinois State, Connecticut, Bowling Green or Rutgers to start the season, are they? Illinois looks safe to at least push.

Purdue (5 wins) – UNDER. Even though they are getting Rondale Moore back, Purdue’s schedule is an absolute gauntlet. Their non-conference is Memphis, Air Force, and at Boston College. They literally have one guaranteed win and that is Rutgers. Purdue could be a good football team and still not win 5 games. Who is responsible for making that schedule?

Michigan State (4.5 wins) – UNDER. Michigan State was a steady top fifteen program in the country just a few years back. Now they are an absolute dumpster fire. The Spartans did go 7-6 last year but they are another team with a tough schedule. They are at BYU, Toledo at home, and the Miami Hurricanes at home for the non-conference. Then they have to deal with the Big Ten East. Vegas isn’t lying; the Spartans are bad and it’s going to take a while for them.

Maryland (3.5 wins) – UNDER. It seems disrespectful to say a team with a prominent name and location like Maryland won’t get four wins. But the truth of the matter is they have two guaranteed wins in Towson and Rutgers (both at home). After that, they won’t be favored in any contest. They will be a punching bag in the Big Ten East once again.

Rutgers (2.5 wins) – UNDER. Rutgers will beat Monmouth College to open the season and then lose the rest of their games. That’s all there is to it.

KJ Hill, A Rough Draft…

Michael Thomas, Terry Glenn, David Boston, Michael Jenkins, Santonio Holmes, Ted Ginn Jr., Joey Galloway and Cris Carter. What do all these players have in common? Captain obvious response: all Buckeye great receivers who have gone on to fantastic careers in the NFL. More in-depth response: while Ohio State has been a wide receiver factory over the last 30 years, none of these players caught more passes in college than KJ Hill.

Quez Watkins, James Proche, Dezmon Patmon, Darnell Mooney, Isaiah Coulter, and John Hightower. What do you all these dudes have in common? Simple response: no clue because you’ve probably never heard of any of them. The truth: all are wide receivers who were drafted ahead of KJ Hill in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Not throwing shade at the guys mentioned, of course. Menace2Sports is here for the culture and we hope each of them go on to have tremendous professional careers. However, we are also here for keeping it 100 thousand and KJ falling into the 7th round is absurd.

He wasn’t even the first guy named KJ drafted. Hell, he wasn’t even the first receiver named KJ drafted. Penn State’s KJ Hamler caught a little over one fourth of the balls KJ Hill caught in college, though. No big deal. At least his weekend was better than KJ Un’s. Too soon?

ProFootballFocus had KJ Hill listed as the 73rd prospect in the draft. He ended up 220th. To be clear, the Chargers picked up a high 3rd rounder in the 7th. Good for them, I guess.

Many questioned his 40 time (4.60) at the combine. Ironically, two of the premier WRs in the NFL ran a very similar time; Michael Thomas and DeAndre Hopkins both ran a 4.57. Are we suggesting KJ is the next Hopkins, of course not. But it is food for thought.

And like these two high volume receivers, KJ has hands and he gets open. He was open in the Big Ten. He was open against Clemson. And more interestingly, he was open against Marshon Lattimore, Eli Apple, Denzel Ward, Gareon Conley, Damon Arnette, Jeff Okudah, etc. at practice the last few years. So we are falling in love with these Buckeye corners but not the players who are having success against them regularly?

The silver lining for KJ is he was selected to move to Los Angeles and compete for a spot in an offense that thrives in the short passing game. He’s going to be just fine.

Of course, Buckeye receivers have been passed over recently and gone on to prove their value. Exhibit A: THE aforementioned Michael Thomas. CantGuardMike owns numerous NFL records including most receptions in a season and most receiving yards for a player in their first four seasons. Simply put: he’s goated. However, here are the players selected before him in 2016: Corey Coleman, Will Fuller, Josh Doctson, Laquon Treadwell and Sterling Shepard (Insert Homer Simpson hiding in the shrubs gif here).

Just last year, Terry McLaurin led NFL rookies in receptions and was second in receiving yards. He would’ve likely led comfortably in both but he missed two games with injury. Heading into the season, ESPN talking heads were labeling McLaurin a career special teams guy. However, Terry spent his rookie Sundays in the endzone flexing.

KJ Hill’s 201 career catches at Ohio State is a record that’s going to be safe for a while. He is also 6th in receiving yards and 6th in touchdowns. Until the controversial loss to Clemson in the national semifinal, Ohio State was undefeated in games that KJ caught a touchdown.

When thinking of a pinnacle career moment, was it the game winning touchdown at Penn State his junior year? Or was it the back to back touchdowns his senior year in the Big Ten Championship game? The one-handed snag vs Minnesota? We considered a more simple play:

Last season at Michigan, Ohio State leading 28-16 in the 3rd quarter. Third and goal from the 6. Michigan can get off the field and keep it a two score game. OSU lines up in bunch and isolates KJ on Josh Metellus. KJ stems him and up, bullies him, and safely secures another clutch TD. Ball Game. Guess which player was drafted first, smdh…

Check with the Ohio State coaches or ask Buckeye Nation, KJ Hill is one of the most beloved of his generation. And as the myriad of NFL Buckeyes continue to show out on Sundays, will KJ be the next one? That will be up to him.

Until then, get those Homer Simpson gifs ready.

Big Ten (Fourteen) Names You Need to Know in 2020

By: Julian Thomas

It might only be February, but college players and coaches around the country are counting down the days until spring practice. Likewise, football fans are ready to get a head start on the 2020 season on the gridiron.

Heading into spring football, Menace2Sports has compiled a comprehensive list of names that you just have to know in the Big Ten. In a conference loaded with talent, below is a list of bonafide players who are going to be difference makers next season and ultimately have a great chance to play on Sundays. Using ProFootballFocus stats and rankings, we will follow up this list with a few other compilations to get you prepared for what is going to be an exciting off-season.

And since the name of the conference, Big Ten, is a quintessential example of Malapropism (the conference has fourteen teams), here is our list of FOURTEEN impact players in 2020:

1. Justin Fields, Ohio State QB – Justin Fields spearheads this list as he enters the season alongside Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tugaovailoa as one of the three legitimate Heisman candidates. According to ProFootballFocus, Buckeye QB1 was the 2nd ranked quarterback in the nation behind Joe Burrow last year. Fields torched the Big Ten in his first season with the Buckeyes shattering records; however, his final pass of the season sailed into the arms of a Clemson DB crushing Ohio State’s title hopes. Surrounded by top end talent, a motivated Justin Fields will lead what looks to be the most potent offense in the country in 2020.

2. Micah Parsons, Penn State LB – Parsons is an absolute freak anchoring Penn State’s defense. Once regarded as a future Buckeye, Parsons has made a name for himself in Happy Valley. This tackling machine has first round draft pick written all over him. In his madman approach to defense, he makes plays that we haven’t seen since Bobby Boucher led the SCLSU Mud-Dogs to the Bourbon Bowl. PFF ranked Parsons the #1 LB in the nation last season. This is not a drill.

3. Chris Olave, Ohio State WR – Big Play Alert! Olave broke out as a true freshman against Michigan, then followed it up with a huge season as a sophomore. Olave is fast, smooth, and a clutch performer. Alongside Garrett Wilson, Jameson Williams, and a trio of incoming freshmen, Zone 6 2020 might be the most lethal position group in the nation. PFF ranked Olave the 25th WR in the nation as a sophomore.

4. Rashod Bateman, Minnesota WR – According to PFF, Bateman is the number 1 returning wide out in the conference; he almost ROW’d the Gophers all the way to Indianapolis in 2019. It was remarkable to see him playing his best football down the stretch when he was all over the opponents’ defensive plans. His partner in crime Tyler Johnson heads to the draft; however, returning Tanner Morgan at QB, Minnesota will like their chances in the Big Ten West come September.

5. Shaun Wade, CB – Shaun Wade shocked Buckeye insiders when he held a press conference in Jacksonville to announce he was coming back to Ohio State. His ejection in the National Semifinal might have been the pivotal moment in the entire college football season. Wade has been a swiss army knife for the Silver Bullets since his freshman season, always covering the other team’s top target. Can he carry the Ohio State back four that has routinely sent dudes to the NFL like clockwork? Lots of question marks back there other than Wade.

6. Jack Sanborn, Wisconsin LB – Seemingly every year, Wisconsin graduates an overachieving set of defensive players and replaces them with a handful of more of the same. With the departure of studs Chris Orr and Zack Baun, the 2020 Badgers’ defense will be championed by Jack Sanborn. He was actually their best defensive player statistically last year leading them in snaps, tackles as well as adding 3 INTs, an FF and an FR.

7. Pat Freiermuth, Penn State TE – Earning the nickname Pat “Frankenstein”, the Nittany Lions tight end is truly a monster. He has tremendous hands, solid speed, and caught 7 touchdowns last season. The biggest question mark might be the fact that he had 0 TDs in PSU’s last 5 games as they finished 3-2. There is no doubt, NFL scouts will be out to see Freiermuth.

8. Rondale Moore, Purdue WR – Remember when Rondale Moore showed up as a true freshman and incinerated defenses by himself? Slowed by injuries last year, the Purdue offense just wasn’t the same. Can Moore get back to the level he played at two years ago when PFF ranked him tied for 1st among B1G receivers? If so, the Tyreke Hill of college football will be ready to make a huge impact in the Big Ten.

9. – Nico Collins, Michigan WR –  Nico Collins at number 9? That’s the former number of DPJ who spurned Michigan for the draft. Many thought Collins would do the same. Did he make the right decision by coming back? He erupted for 6 catches, 165 yards and 3 touchdowns vs Indiana. However, following that performance, he was a non-factor vs Ohio State and Alabama as the Wolverines’ late season woes continued. Ronnie Bell and a few other young slots give OC Josh Gattis another chance to move the Michigan offense forward.

10. Alaric Jackson, Iowa OT – It would not be the Big Ten if a SLOB didn’t make the top player list. Iowa DE AJ Epenesa might have been the most underrated player in the country last season. Now, he looks to be a potential first rounder. Alaric Jackson will anchor Kirk Firentz’ life force, the O-Line. In a division with potential parody, Iowa will be right there with a chance. And Jackson will be their next high draft pick. Btw: who even knew George Kittle went to Iowa?

11. Michael Penix Jr., Indiana QB – What a year for Indiana. After getting utterly annihilated by the Buckeyes, IU turned their season around, won 8 games in the regular season and had an SEC opponent beat in the bowl game before throwing it away in the final minutes. All of this without their starting QB, who was torching defenses prior to his injury; only Tanner Morgan and Justin Fields were grading out better. Surrounded by a decent group of weapons, Penix Jr. could be ready to lead the Hoosiers to another great season.

12. Wan’Dale Robinson, Nebraska WR – Scott Frost enters his third year as Nebraska HC coming off another underwhelming season, albeit they improved from 4-8 year one to 5-7 year two. There is no doubt that the Cornhuskers have some skill as Wan’Dale Robinson can change a football contest quickly. It’s also the third year as a starter for QB Adrian Martinez. I would hope Nebraska has bigger goals in mind than simply going 6-6 and making a bowl game?

13. Brandon Peters, Illinois QB – The surprise team of the year in 2019 in the Big Ten was Illinois. Michigan transfer Brandon Peters played a great season. Although his grades do not jump off the page, he and Lovie Smith have resurrected Illinois football. Peters led the Illini to a benchmark victory over Wisconsin, and earned a bowl berth. Illinois is no longer a cupcake game for Big Ten powers, especially with Peters heading into his final season at the helm.

14. Garrett Wilson, Ohio State QB – It’s honestly crazy to have Garrett Wilson listed as 14th on this list. He has potential to be the best receiver at Ohio State since Michael Thomas. His drop rate was the lowest of all the Buckeye receivers last year and that is just sick. Wilson is a pro playing in college and he’s only a true sophomore.Keep an eye on: Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan, OSU LB Pete Werner, Michigan DB Daxton Hill, PSU RBs Journey Brown and Noah Cain, MSU RB Elijah Collins.
